When Tracking Parameters Create Duplicate URLs

Written by

Tracking parameters can create many versions of the same page. That is useful for analytics, but it should not create duplicate SEO signals.

Use Canonical Tag Generator for canonical markup planning and URL Decode Text when inspecting long parameter strings.

Keep the canonical clean

The canonical URL should normally point to the clean page, not to every campaign variant. Campaign parameters explain visits; they should not define the main page identity.

Do not index parameter-only variants

If parameter URLs are crawlable, make sure they do not become thin duplicates in sitemaps or internal navigation. Link internally to the clean URL whenever tracking is not needed.

Watch redirects and sharing

Redirects should preserve parameters only when analytics needs them. For public navigation, share the shortest useful URL.
