CTR benchmarks are tempting because they look simple. The problem is that CTR changes dramatically by channel, placement, audience, brand familiarity and intent. A search ad, a retargeting ad, a cold social ad and an email link should not be judged with one universal number.
Use the CTR Calculator to compute the rate, then use the Paid Campaign Metrics pillar to read it beside CPC, CPL, CPA and ROAS.
Placement changes the meaning
A top search placement, a sidebar ad, a feed ad and a footer email link all create different click behavior. Compare CTR only with similar placements.
Intent changes click quality
High-intent search traffic may click less often but convert better. Curiosity traffic may click more often but produce weak leads. CTR is a message signal, not a business result.
Use benchmarks as a diagnostic
If CTR is much lower than usual for the same placement, test the title, creative, offer or audience match. If CTR rises while conversion falls, the new message may be attracting the wrong people.
